Lavochkin La-11 – War Thunder Review

In real life

The La-11 was developed as a long-range version of the La-9 with increased fuel capacity and a more comfortable cockpit. It was designed to be low to medium-altitude general-purpose fighter with the intent of also being capable of escort fighter role. In reality, the La-11 would serve as interceptor targeting bombers and transport aircraft. The aircraft retained poor high-altitude performance that led to most La-11s being replaced by early jets such as the Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15. Approximately 1,200 units were built, and the last La-11 was retired in 1966 (PLAAF).

In War Thunder

The La-11 in the USSR tech tree was introduced in Update 1.65 “Way of the Samurai” as a premium pack. It was removed from the store after the 2018 Summer Sale and now it usually reappears on S.A. Lavochkin’s birthday for 4880 GE. The La-11 in the Chinese tech tree was added in Update 2.13 “Winged Lions” as a regular tech-tree vehicle and it requires 46,000 RP and 155,000 SL. Both aircraft are rank 4 and have a battle rating of 5.0.

La-11 has slightly worse climb rate and turn rate than the La-9 because of its greater weight. With a low fuel load, its flight performance is very similar to the La-9. The aircraft also loses WEP at high altitudes. The aircraft is very good at boom-and-zoom attacks but not that great in a turn fight. Its cannons also enable it to kill some medium and light tanks in Ground Realistic Battles.

Conclusion

The La-11 is most effective when used with energy management and boom-and-zoom attacks. The USSR La-11 can research aircraft from Rank 1 through 5, making it a fairly good grinding plane if purchased at a discount. Putting a talisman on the Chinese La-11 is generally not worth it as you have better options, but spading it can be fun.
